A Congress team led by former Union Minister Kahnu Charan Lenka on
Monday urged the State Government to declare Balangir district as
drought-affected as crops in most parts of the district have been damaged due
to scanty rainfall.
"I visited Sadeipali and Baidipali gram panchyats. The crop
situation in Balangir is really grim," Lenka said, adding, "Although
officially this district has suffered a crop loss of 50 per cent, actual
percentage would more than 80 per cent. Only crops grown in Bahal (low) land
would give a good harvest."
He demanded that the Government should declare the district
drought-hit and give compensation of `0,000 per acre. Apprehending that many
people would migrate to outside people for work, Lenka too urged the Government
to provide adequate support to farmers to undertake Rabi cultivation on time.
He alleged that there is no truth about the Agriculture Minister's statement
that seeds for Rabi cultivation have been sent to gram panhayats.
"The Deputy Director Agriculture office here reveals a total
opposite picture and seeds have not been arrived excepting a few bags of Mung
seeds," said Lenka.
