Another case of apathy and hazardous work culture for migrant
workers in Balangir district has come to the fore.
Giving a petition to the district Collector, a migrant worker from
Muribahal area has complained that he and his family members were maltreated at
a workplace at Raipur and his daughter was maimed after she got electric shock
at the work site. He said that neither the contractor, nor the Government of
Chattishgarh gave any assistance to him for the treatment of his eight-year-old
daughter, who was injured severely after getting electric shock and later, her
hands and legs were amputated.
According to reports, Bijaya Nag of Jamuna Bahal village of
Muribahal block had migrated to Raipur last year and worked under contractor
Siba Sahu for a few months. Nag urged Balangir Collector M Muthukumar to
provide him financial assistance for treatment of her daughter Payal Nag who
lost her limbs in Raipur on April 16.
"I was staying in a temporary house given by my contractor. I
worked in a building in Dwarikagate Imlildihi area. On April 16 last, my son
Aakash and daughter Payal ( 8) went upstairs of the building to give water in
the newly constructed building. While giving water, Payal came in contact with
electric wire and was injured seriously.
She was admitted in a hospital but the doctors advised for
amputation of both hands and legs which was done," said Nag. For bearing
the medical expenses, he said that he had to mortgage all his lands. Even
though Chattisgarh Government has given assurance for financial assistance,
nothing has materialised.
The electricity department of Chhatisgarh only gave some monetary
assistance, said Nag, adding that he needs Rs5 to Rs7 lakh for further
treatment of his injured daughter. Besides, he also demanded action against the
contactor.
When asked, Balangir ADM Ashok Kumar Naik said, "We have
given Rs30,000 from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and Red Cross fund. The case
has been referred to the SCB Medical College Hospital. We are referring the
case to the Child Welfare Committee, Balangir for further step."
