Absence of adequate
space has prevented solid waste dumping and its proper management in Balangir
district headquarters town.According to official sources, everyday a total of
5.2 MT of garbage is generated from the 21wards of the Balangir Municipality
which is spread over 32.77 sqkm of area.
Although there is a provision that garbage should be dumped in an
earmarked yard, 5 km away from the town, one finds garbage being dumped in at
by- pass road side in Balangir-Sonepur road, Titilagarh road, Patnagarh road
and in Bishnumunda area.
The most important point is the dumping yard at Bishnumunda which
is spread over 10 acres has run into a problem with a massive area having been
encroached upon by the locals.
“When we tried to raise a boundary wall, it was not possible due
to opposition by the encroachers. We have appraised the situation to the higher
authorities and have suggested another 10 acres of land for dumping purpose.
The yard would be developed only after the land comes into possession of the
Balangir Municipality,” said Executive Officer of Balangir Municipality Santosh
Behera. He added, “We have stopped dumping of garbage in Patnagarh road and have
also instructed employees not to do it at Titiligarh road.”
