Even though the State Government has announced to provide supports to drought-affected peasants, incidents of more debt-burdened farmers attempting to commit suicide in Balangir district have come to the fore
According to reports, Yogeshwar Pradhan (25) of Badika village on Wednesday drank insecticide in an attempt to commit suicide at his crop field. He was shifted to Loisingha hospital and then to the District Headquarters Hospital. As his condition deteriorated further, he was shifted to the Burla medical college.
Yogeshwar had undertaken paddy cultivation in his 2.5 acres land as well as in others’ lands on sharecropping basis. All crops were damaged due to scanty rainfall. The loss led to argument in the family and he drank insecticide.
In another incident, a farmer of Nunianpali village under Agalpur block, Pradeep Seth (20), tried to commit suicide this morning by consuming poison.
Pradeep, sharecropper, was worried as his crops were damaged. Immediately after he consumed poison, he was rushed to DHH.
“His condition is stable now,” said CDMO Dr RN Tripathy.
Notably, two days ago a farmer, Arakshit Majhi (45), had consumed insecticide and later died while undergoing treatment at the DHH.
Arakshit had brought loans from moneylenders and crop loss forced him to take this extreme step.
