Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) GVV Sarma on Thursday informed that a total of 139 blocks in 21 districts have been affected by drought in the State while the Government has received reports of alleged suicide of 41 farmers from district Collectors.
“The Government is reviewing the reports of the District Collectors on the alleged suicide of 41 farmers and also the eye estimate reports of crop loss. So far as farmers’ death is concerned, we are studying the reports in details to find out the causes and circumstances of the deaths,” Sarma told reporters here.
Sarma said the District Collectors, as per the Odisha Relief Code, have submitted eye estimate reports on the crop conditions in their districts this year.
“As per reports, more than 33 per cent of crops in 139 blocks of 21 districts have been damaged due to scanty rainfall this year,” he added.
He further said as per the Odisha Relief Code, a detailed crop-cutting experiment would be made.
“After the crop cutting experiment is completed, a survey will be made to find out the actual farmers and villages sustaining over 33 per cent of crop loss. After that, they will be provided agricultural inputs, subsidy under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) scheme,” added Sarma.
He also informed that the Government has taken steps under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against the moneylenders who are doing business without registration.
He further said the Government is taking steps for more coordinated action in the agriculture sector.
